Infotrac contains over 11,500 journal titles, and over 6,500 are full text (i.e. you can read the whole article instantly).

It is easy to search, try it for yourself, or come to the Enquiry Desk for a demonstration.

(You'll need an Athens password to use Infotrac from home, we can quickly set this up for you, or look at yesterday's blogpost on how to create your own).

To access Infotrac, click this link, or

1. Go to Blackboard
2. Go to the Information Store link on the left (not the catalogue)
3. Click on the grey e-resources button
4. Scroll down to Infotrac, and click on the title
5. Enter your Athens username and password (if off campus)
5. Select General One File to access articles

Tips on searching:
  • Try changing the "keyword" dropdown to "abstract" if you want to narrow your search results ("abstract" is the paragraph about the article).
  • Select from the AND, OR, NOT dropdowns to broaden or narrow your results. (AND narrows, OR broadens, NOT narrows).
  • Consider changing the publication dates.
  • Results - look under the "academic journals" tab for peer-reviewed (and therefore trustworthy) articles.
Please come to the Enquiry Desk in the Information Store if you would like help with any of this, we are more than happy to help!

Setting up an Athens account

What is an Athens account?

Athens is a password manager system which provides access to a wide range of electronic resources such as journals and databases to which the CCN subscribes. Your personal Athens username includes a CCN prefix, identifying you as a CCN student or member of staff and allowing access to resources off campus.

In college you can access most electronic resources directly from links on Blackboard, without needing to log in to your Athens account.

How do I access electronic resources using Athens?

There is more than one way of accessing electronic resources using Athens:

1.      The Information Store link on Blackboard lists all the electronic resources that CCN subscribes to. You are able to see those resources which you can access using Athens as well as those requiring an alternative login. You can access these Blackboard pages from off campus.
2.      You can view and access CCN’s electronic resource subscriptions directly from the Athens website: www.openathens.net
3.      When you access an electronic subscription on the internet you will be prompted to enter your Athens user name and password to access the information.

How do I set up my Athens account?

**
You must use a college computer to create your account**

·        Once logged onto the computer open Internet Explorer.

·        In the address box type www.openathens.net

·        Click the “self-registration” option.

·        In the “login to Athens” box, type in the following boxes:
o       username:            ccninfostore2010
o       password:            2010@ccn
o       click the “login” button

·        Fill out the form with your details.

·        We recommend using your college computer user name as your Athens user name (maximum of 20 characters). NB. Athens will automatically prefix ccn to the username you use.

·        Your Athens password must be a mix of letters and numbers or other characters and be between 6 - 20 characters long.

·        The password is case sensitive, so if you use upper case initially you must always use upper case when entering your password.
·        The email address does not have to be your college one.  (Staff are recommended to use their college address).

·        Once you have completed the mandatory fields click the submit button once.

·        A message will state that your account has been created with immediate effect and you will get an automatic confirmation email sent to the email address you provided.

·        If there are any problems with the information you have entered, the system will take you back and indicate with a red * which fields you need to re-enter.

·        Your account will last one academic year and needs to be reset in the autumn term.

Remember you can also ask for help regarding any aspect of electronic resources:
o       at the Information Store Enquiries desk
o       or email tis@ccn.ac.uk
o       or phone 01603 773224.

Recommended DVD for March

Recommended DVD for March:
Pleasantville
(shelved at 791.43)

Synopsis:
A brother and sister from the 1990s are sucked into their television set and suddenly find themselves trapped in a 1950s style television show. Here they have loving parents, old fashioned values, and an overwhelming amount of innocence and naivete. Not sure how to get home, they integrate themselves into this "backwards" society and slowly bring some color to this black and white world. But as innocence fades, the two teens begin to wonder if their 90s outlook is really to be preferred. Written by R. P. Falvey  for IMDB.com

Today's the day!

Come in and help us celebrate World Book Night
today from 2pm.

Includes a huge book giveaway and more face painting!

Thursday 3 March 2011

You said, we did...

We have rearranged the magazines and journals into A-Z order by title after receiving feedback that arranging them by subject area was making them harder to find.

Magazine and journal titles beginning with "A" are on the shelves nearest the comfy seating, titles at the end of the alphabet are at the end nearest the printers.

To help you find resources, there is an A-Z Guide and a Subject Guide at the far end of the shelving. As always, if you are not sure, please ask.
